I’ve always been drawn to small businesses and the people who build them.
There is something different about a company that exists because someone had an idea, took a risk and turned it into something real. The best small businesses often have things larger companies would struggle to manufacture: loyal customers, deep expertise, reputation, relationships and a very clear sense of how things should be done.
But many of those strengths still live primarily with the founder.
And over time, the business can become incredibly successful while the way it operates, markets itself or uses technology hasn’t quite kept pace with what it has become.
That’s the kind of business challenge I’m drawn to.
Helping a good business preserve what made it successful while making it stronger, more capable and better prepared for what comes next.
The business comes first.
I’m not interested in modernizing something simply for the sake of making it look modern.
The right answer might be a better way of operating.
It might be a website that finally reflects the quality of the business.
It might be taking a strong brick-and-mortar company online, articulating a brand that has always existed intuitively, creating a new revenue channel, or using technology to remove work that no longer needs someone’s time.
The solution depends on the business.
The goal stays remarkably consistent: build something that works better and becomes more valuable because of it.
